Malls & Department Stores

Bangkok's malls โ€” what each one is actually for

Bangkok has some of the best shopping malls in Asia โ€” genuinely world-class in scale, variety, and air conditioning. But they're not interchangeable. Each major mall has a distinct character, price point, and purpose. Knowing which one to go to for what saves significant time and money.

Ground Level

Thailand's malls are genuinely excellent โ€” but they're not cheap

A common misconception is that everything in Thailand is cheap. In the malls, that's largely not true โ€” branded clothing, electronics, cosmetics, and international goods are priced at or above their home-country retail prices once import duties are applied. Where Thai malls genuinely shine: food courts (best value in any mall system in the world), local Thai brands, affordable mid-tier fashion, and the sheer convenience of having every service in one air-conditioned building. Shop in malls for comfort and variety, not to find bargains on international brands.

Bangkok's flagship luxury mall

Bangkok's most prestigious mall โ€” Gucci, Louis Vuitton, Prada, a Ferrari showroom, a full supermarket (Gourmet Market), a massive cinema complex, and an aquarium. More of a destination than a shopping venue for most visitors. The food court in the basement (Taste of Thailand) is one of the best in the city despite the premium surroundings.

What Works

Thai mall food courts are genuinely extraordinary

Thai mall food courts are not an afterthought โ€” they're a legitimate reason to visit the mall. Terminal 21's Pier 21 food court serves authentic Thai dishes at เธฟ45โ€“80. MBK's food court is similar in price and scope. Even the premium malls (Paragon, EmQuartier) have food court sections with accessible pricing relative to the mall context. The system: you buy a top-up card at the entrance, spend it across multiple stalls, get a refund on the balance when you leave. The food quality is consistently higher than most tourist restaurants at a fraction of the price.

Pier 21 โ€” Terminal 21 (Asok)

Consistently ranked one of Bangkok's best food courts. Authentic Thai dishes from เธฟ45โ€“80, clean environment, fast service. Pad thai, boat noodles, green curry, mango sticky rice, fresh fruit. Prepaid card system, balance refundable.

MBK Food Court (5th Floor)

Larger and more chaotic than Pier 21 but similarly priced โ€” เธฟ50โ€“90 per dish. Strong on regional Thai cuisine, good Muslim food section, excellent fresh fruit stalls.

Food Republic / Food Hall Chains

Operates food courts in multiple Bangkok malls (Siam Center, CentralWorld). Slightly more curated, branded stall concepts. Pricing a step up โ€” เธฟ80โ€“150 per dish โ€” but still significantly below mall restaurants. The Isaan food stalls are consistently good.

Markets & Bazaars

Thailand's markets โ€” from the world's largest weekend market to night bazaars

Thailand's market culture is one of its greatest shopping assets โ€” particularly for visitors who want something beyond mall retail. Chatuchak is a genuine world-class market experience. The night bazaars in Chiang Mai and Bangkok offer evening shopping culture. Knowing which markets are for tourists and which are for locals changes what you pay significantly.

Chatuchak Weekend Market (JJ Market)

Over 8,000 stalls across 27 sections โ€” genuinely one of the largest markets in the world. Open Saturday and Sunday, roughly 9amโ€“6pm (some sections from 6am, some until 9pm). Sections cover clothing, antiques, home dรฉcor, plants, pets, art, ceramics, vintage, handicrafts, street food, and more.

The key to navigating Chatuchak: download the map before you go (the official JJ Market app or a downloaded PDF), identify which section numbers cover what you want, and go with a specific goal. Sections 2โ€“4 for antiques, dรฉcor, and plants; sections 10โ€“26 for clothing and accessories; section 27 for art and handicrafts.

Saturday & Sunday onlyNegotiation expectedBTS Mo ChitMRT Chatuchak Park

Talad Rot Fai (Train Market)

Bangkok's vintage and antiques night market โ€” two locations (Ratchada and Srinakarin), open Thursdayโ€“Sunday from roughly 5pm. Strongest for vintage clothing, antique furniture and dรฉcor, retro electronics, vintage signage, Thai nostalgia items. Food and bar scene excellent alongside the shopping.

The Srinakarin location (Talad Rot Fai 2) is larger and more established. The Ratchada location is smaller but more conveniently located for central Bangkok. Both have higher-quality vintage finds than Chatuchak's antique sections.

Night Bazaars by City

Chiang Mai Night Bazaar

The original and most established night bazaar in Thailand โ€” running nightly along Chang Khlan Road from around 6pm. Strong on Northern Thai handicrafts: lacquerware, hill tribe textiles, carved wood, silverwork, celadon ceramics, silk. Bargaining is expected โ€” opening prices typically 40โ€“60% above what vendors will accept.

Chiang Mai Walking Streets

Distinct from the Night Bazaar โ€” the Saturday Walking Street (Wualai Road) and Sunday Walking Street (Tha Phae to Loi Kroh Road) are weekend-only events that close streets to traffic. Stronger on authentic local crafts, student art, and Northern Thai food, with a better quality-to-price ratio than the Night Bazaar for craft items.

Asiatique The Riverfront (Bangkok)

A curated riverside night market in Bangkok's Charoen Krung area โ€” warehouses converted into boutiques, restaurants, and market stalls alongside the Chao Phraya River. More lifestyle destination than bargain market: quality Thai designer brands, craft beer venues, international dining, a Ferris wheel. Priced at tourist and designer levels.

Patpong Night Market (Bangkok)

Runs alongside the red-light district โ€” stalls selling the usual tourist inventory: fake watches, fake bags, fake everything. Fine for browsing and occasional genuine souvenir, but fake goods quality here is lower than at dedicated counterfeit venues. The genuine Patpong selling point is the surrounding food and bar street culture, not the market stalls.

Phuket Weekend Market (Naka Market)

Phuket's best local market โ€” Saturday and Sunday evenings in northern Phuket near Central Festival. Primarily serves residents rather than tourists: clothing, household goods, electronics, food stalls at local prices. Prices are fair and negotiation is less expected than at tourist-facing markets.

Chatuchak Plant Section

Sections 3โ€“4 of Chatuchak are dedicated entirely to plants, pots, gardening tools, and garden dรฉcor โ€” one of the best plant markets in Asia. Tropical plants unavailable or prohibitively expensive at home sell for เธฟ50โ€“500. Orchids, exotic ferns, bonsai, rare aroids, succulents, fish, and birds.

Online Shopping

Online shopping in Thailand โ€” what works, what doesn't

Thailand has a well-developed e-commerce ecosystem โ€” Lazada and Shopee dominate, with LINE Shopping and Kaidee (the Thai Craigslist) rounding out the options. Delivery to Bangkok addresses is reliable and fast. Outside Bangkok, delivery times extend and certain delivery points become impractical.

Lazada Thailand

Alibaba-owned, one of Thailand's two dominant e-commerce platforms. Strong on electronics, home goods, fashion, and a broad range of imported products. LazMall is the official brand store section โ€” higher prices but genuine product guarantees and better return policies. Seller quality on the main marketplace varies significantly.

Delivery to Bangkok: 1โ€“3 days standard. Upcountry: 3โ€“7 days. Cash on delivery available. Returns straightforward for LazMall orders; more complicated for individual sellers.

Electronics & home goodsLazMall brand guaranteeCash on delivery

Shopee Thailand

Sea Group's platform and Lazada's main competitor โ€” increasingly dominant, particularly for fashion, beauty, and everyday goods. Shopee Mall is the official brand section. Flash sales and voucher system more aggressive than Lazada. Shopee Live (live-stream shopping) is genuinely popular and often has exclusive flash deals.

Delivery typically 1โ€“4 days in Bangkok and major cities. ShopeePay integration useful once set up. App interface generally faster and cleaner than Lazada's for mobile shopping.

Fashion, beauty, daily goodsAggressive flash salesShopee Mall
Good to Know

Cash on delivery โ€” still the dominant payment method

Despite the growth of digital payments, Cash on Delivery (COD) remains widely used in Thailand for online orders, especially for first-time purchases from new sellers. Riders carry change. COD adds a day or two to processing for some sellers but is useful if you haven't set up a Thai bank account yet. Once you have a PromptPay or TrueMoney Wallet account, cashless payment unlocks significantly better promotion access on both platforms.

Other Platforms Worth Knowing

LINE Shopping & LINE Man Mart

LINE is Thailand's dominant messaging platform and its shopping integration aggregates products from multiple sellers within the LINE ecosystem. Many Thai small businesses sell exclusively via LINE, particularly in fashion, beauty, and food. LINE Man Mart handles quick-delivery grocery and convenience items.

Kaidee โ€” Thailand's Marketplace

Kaidee.com is Thailand's equivalent of Craigslist or Facebook Marketplace โ€” classified listings for second-hand goods, cars, property, and private sales. Very useful for buying used electronics, furniture, motorbikes, and household items at significant discounts. Interface is in Thai but Google Translate handles it adequately.

Returns & Consumer Protection

Thai consumer protection for online shopping is improving but still weaker than Western markets. LazMall and Shopee Mall have structured return policies with reasonable enforcement. Individual sellers on the open marketplace are more variable โ€” photograph everything on arrival before opening fully. Credit card chargebacks available as a last resort.

Importing Goods to Thailand

Ordering from international platforms (Amazon US, ASOS, iHerb) to a Thai address is possible but involves customs clearance, import duties, and 7% VAT. This got meaningfully worse in 2026 โ€” see the update below.

The เธฟ1,500 duty-free threshold is gone as of January 1, 2026

Every online import now gets taxed โ€” even a เธฟ100 order

For years, anything ordered from overseas valued under เธฟ1,500 cleared Thai customs duty-free. That exemption was formally abolished on January 1, 2026, as part of the Customs Department's "Quick Big Win" enforcement policy โ€” Thailand now taxes imports from the very first baht of value. Clothing and footwear generally carry about 30% duty, bags around 20%, and most other categories 10โ€“20% depending on classification, all on top of the standard 7% VAT. The Customs Department has signed direct data-sharing agreements with Shopee and Lazada specifically to enforce this, and most platforms now fold the duty and VAT into the checkout price automatically rather than surprising you at delivery. If you were used to small overseas orders clearing free, budget for that no longer being true.

Imports & What Costs More

What's cheap in Thailand โ€” and what costs significantly more

Thailand applies significant taxes to many imported product categories โ€” particularly alcohol, tobacco, cars, and electronics โ€” through a mix of import duty, excise tax, and VAT. Understanding which items cost more here than at home prevents sticker shock and shapes smart buying decisions before you arrive or when you travel home.

CategoryThailand vs. HomeWhyStrategy
Wine (imported)2โ€“4x more expensiveExcise tax (~เธฟ900โ€“1,000/liter of alcohol) + VAT โ€” import duty itself was cut to near-zero in 2024 and remains cut through 2026, but the excise tax keeps retail highBuy at Makro or Villa Market for best retail prices. Duty-free at the airport is often cheaper still.

Warning

Electronics โ€” buy from authorised dealers only

Thailand has a significant grey-market electronics trade, particularly for Apple products, cameras, and gaming consoles. Grey-market items may be marginally cheaper but come without Thai warranty coverage โ€” if something goes wrong, you have no local recourse. Authorised Thai Apple resellers (iStudio, iCare, official Apple stores in major malls) carry the same products at prices only slightly above grey-market alternatives with full warranty.

Duty-Free Strategy

Arrival Duty-Free Allowance

Thailand allows each arriving traveller to bring: 1 litre of alcohol duty-free, 200 cigarettes (or 250g of other tobacco), and personal goods up to เธฟ20,000 in value. The alcohol allowance is the most practically useful. Bringing the maximum on every international arrival is standard practice for regular drinkers living in Thailand.

King Power Duty-Free (Thailand)

Thailand's dominant duty-free operator, at airports and select standalone complexes. Its flagship downtown store, King Power Rangnam in Bangkok, sells duty-free to anyone with a departure ticket within 30 days and remains fully open, along with a King Power branch at One Bangkok and one in Phuket. Its airport concessions (Suvarnabhumi, Don Mueang, Phuket, Chiang Mai, Hat Yai) were extended through a renegotiated contract in December 2025. Its former downtown Pattaya complex, however, was permanently closed in a September 2025 restructuring alongside two other branches โ€” check current locations before planning a trip specifically around one.

What Not to Bring In

Thailand's customs enforcement is strict on certain categories: vaping devices and e-cigarettes are technically illegal to import (enforcement inconsistent but confiscation happens). Buddha images over a certain size require export permits. Prescription medications should be brought with a doctor's letter and original packaging. Firearms and their components: strictly prohibited with serious penalties.

Clothing & Tailors

Clothing and tailoring in Thailand โ€” the genuine opportunity and the real traps

Custom tailoring is one of the genuinely great value propositions of living in or visiting Thailand. A well-made suit, dress shirts, or outfit from a reputable Thai tailor costs a fraction of what the same garment costs at home. But the tailor industry also has one of the highest tourist-scam densities in the country.

The tailor scam โ€” how it works and how to avoid it

The classic Bangkok tailor scam: a tuk-tuk driver, friendly local, or hotel staff "recommends" a tailor as their cousin or a government export shop with a special deal today only. You're taken to a polished shopfront where fast-talking staff take your measurements and quote a reasonable price. The finished garment arrives poorly made, in inferior fabric, too late for alterations, or not at all. The tell is always the unsolicited recommendation combined with urgency. Any tailor recommended by a tuk-tuk driver or accompanied by a tout should be avoided entirely. Good tailors don't need this system; they have repeat clients and reviews.

How to Find a Legitimate Tailor

Legitimate tailors in Bangkok are concentrated in two areas: Sukhumvit Road (particularly Soi 11, Soi 15, and the Nana area) and Silom Road. The Sukhumvit strip has dozens of established shops serving the expat and business community for years. Key indicators of a reputable tailor: they ask for at least two fittings, they have fabric swatches from genuine suppliers, they don't pressure same-day decisions, and they have a physical portfolio of previous work rather than just website photos.

Budget at minimum two days for a shirt (one fitting, one pickup), three to five days for a suit. Anyone offering a quality suit in 24 hours is cutting corners. Plan your tailor visit early in your stay so there's time for proper fittings.

What to Have Made โ€” and Realistic Prices

Where Thai tailoring delivers genuine value: suits (เธฟ8,000โ€“25,000 for a well-made two-piece in good fabric, versus เธฟ50,000+ equivalent in Europe), dress shirts (เธฟ1,200โ€“3,000 each made-to-measure), women's dresses and formal wear (เธฟ3,000โ€“12,000), and linen casual wear.

Budget warning: the cheapest quote is not the best deal. A suit for เธฟ4,000โ€“6,000 will be made from inferior polyester blends that look fine for a week. Proper wool suiting fabric starts at เธฟ8,000โ€“10,000 for a suit. Bring fabric reference photos and discuss fabric content specifically.

Phahurat โ€” Bangkok's Fabric District

Phahurat Road near Chinatown (Yaowarat) is Bangkok's wholesale fabric district โ€” a warren of shops selling everything from raw silk to polyester blends to imported Italian wool. If you want to buy fabric yourself and take it to a tailor, Phahurat is where to go. Prices are wholesale โ€” significantly below what tailor shops charge for their own fabric.

Thai Sizing Reality

Thai sizing runs small by Western standards โ€” particularly for men over 180cm and women over size 12 (UK) / size 8 (US). In mainstream Thai clothing stores, XL is often the largest available size, and it frequently corresponds to a Western medium. If above average Western size, tailoring or specifically seeking international brand stores (H&M, Zara, Uniqlo in major malls) is more reliable than Thai brands.

Uniqlo Thailand

Operates multiple Bangkok stores and carries a wider size range than most Thai clothing brands โ€” going up to 3XL/4XL in many items. Prices comparable to Uniqlo globally. Core lines (Heattech, Airism, linen basics) are the best value for quality basics.

MBK and Pratunam for Budget Fashion

MBK's fashion floors and the Pratunam garment district are Bangkok's go-to for affordable off-the-rack clothing. Pratunam in particular is a wholesale garment area โ€” hundreds of shops selling Thai-made fashion at wholesale prices, open to the public. Sizing issues apply โ€” inspect before buying.

Fakes, Souvenirs & What's Worth Buying

Counterfeit goods and souvenirs โ€” the honest guide

Thailand has a well-known counterfeit goods market โ€” fake watches, bags, sunglasses, clothing, and electronics are openly sold at multiple venues. Separately, Thailand produces genuinely excellent locally made goods that are worth buying for their own quality and value.

Ground Level

The counterfeit reality โ€” legal risk and quality reality

Counterfeit luxury goods (Rolex, Louis Vuitton, Gucci) are sold openly at MBK, Patpong, and various market venues in Bangkok. The practical reality for buyers: bringing counterfeit branded goods back to your home country carries genuine customs risk โ€” confiscation is common in the US, EU, and Australia, and in some countries there are significant fines for importation of counterfeit goods even for personal use. The quality varies from laughable to surprisingly competent, but it's never the same as the genuine item and depreciates immediately. If you want a Rolex, save for one. If you want a cheap watch that tells the time, Thailand has excellent unbranded options for เธฟ200โ€“800 that are honest about what they are.

What's Genuinely Worth Buying

Thai Silk & Cotton

Thai silk is a genuine world-class product โ€” particularly hand-woven mudmee silk from the Isan region. Jim Thompson is the most famous brand (premium priced, quality guaranteed). For better value, Chatuchak textile sections and dedicated silk shops in Chiang Mai carry excellent quality at lower prices. Look for authentic weave patterns rather than machine-printed "silk."

Celadon Ceramics

Chiang Mai is the centre of Thai celadon ceramic production โ€” distinctive grey-green glazed pottery with crackle patterns. Genuine handmade celadon from reputable Chiang Mai studios is excellent quality and far cheaper than equivalent craft ceramics at home. Avoid machine-made versions sold in airport shops.

Carved Teak & Woodwork

Northern Thailand (Chiang Mai, Chiang Rai) has a strong woodcarving tradition. Teak furniture, decorative carvings, and lacquerware are genuinely well-made and reasonably priced. Challenge is shipping โ€” large pieces require freight. Check that teak is certified sustainable โ€” Thailand has strict forestry laws but illegal logging still supplies some of the tourist market.

Thai Spa & Wellness Products

Thailand has a thriving natural cosmetics and spa product industry โ€” lemongrass soap, coconut oil products, herbal balms, Thai massage oils. Brands like Harnn, Erb, and Thann produce quality products at prices well below European equivalents. Found at Chatuchak, airport duty-free, and dedicated boutiques in major malls.

Northern Thai Coffee

Highlands of Chiang Rai and Chiang Mai produce excellent Arabica coffee โ€” grown at altitude by hill tribe communities as part of the Royal Project development program. Doi Chaang and Doi Tung are the most prominent brands. Buy directly from Doi Chaang's own shops in Chiang Mai or from Chatuchak coffee sections.

Thai Condiments & Spices

Genuine Thai pantry items make excellent portable gifts and last well: Tiparos or Megachef fish sauce, proper nam prik pao (roasted chili paste), dried herbs and spice mixes from Chatuchak, tamarind paste, premium jasmine rice. Check airline liquid restrictions for fish sauce and paste products.

Silver Jewellery

Thailand โ€” particularly hill tribe communities around Chiang Mai โ€” produces excellent handmade silver jewellery. Karen silver work, tribal bead jewellery, and contemporary Thai silver designs are available at Chatuchak, the Chiang Mai night bazaar, and dedicated silver shops. Thailand is also a major ruby and sapphire processing centre โ€” genuine stone jewellery requires knowing what to look for or buying from certified dealers.

Contemporary Thai Art

Bangkok and Chiang Mai have active contemporary art scenes with work from emerging Thai artists at prices well below comparable Western markets. Chatuchak's art sections (section 7), Bangkok's gallery districts (Ari, Charoen Krung), and Chiang Mai's gallery cluster near the old city all offer original work. Buying directly from artists at Chatuchak is often half the price of gallery equivalents.

What Works

The souvenir test โ€” ask before you buy

Before buying any "Thai handicraft," it's worth asking one question: is this actually made in Thailand? Much of the "Thai souvenir" market in tourist areas is manufactured in China and imported for retail. The tell-tale signs: uniform perfect finish with no variation, extremely low prices (เธฟ50โ€“100 for something that should take hours to make), absence of maker information, and items that look identical across dozens of stalls. Genuine handmade Thai crafts have slight variations, makers are usually traceable, and the price reflects the labour involved.
